State government offices to remain closed in Cameron Parish Wednesday
Commissioner of Administration Angele Davis announced today that because of flooding caused by Hurricane Ike, state government offices will remain closed on Wednesday, September 17, in Cameron Parish.

Louisiana Workforce Commission updates Business and Career Solutions Center status: Thibodaux center still closed, mobile units providing additional service in storm-impacted areas
The Louisiana Workforce Commission announced today that electricity and Internet service has been restored to all but one of its storm-impacted Business and Career Solutions Centers. The Thibodaux center remains closed pending restoration of power, but a mobile unit will be in the city Wednesday, Sept. 17, to provide services.

LED and LWC Releases One-Page Resource Document for Small Businesses Affected by Hurricanes
With roughly 100,000 small businesses in Louisiana affected by hurricanes Gustav and Ike, Louisiana Economic Development (LED) and Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) have compiled a one-page document that outlines recovery resources, such as free business counseling, loan programs, workforce assistance, tax filing extensions and contracting opportunities at the state and federal levels.

DHH and Partners Begin Post-Hurricane Mosquito Control Plan
The overflowing and debris-clogged drainage ditches and standing water left after Hurricanes Gustav and Ike are potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes. To keep the mosquito population in check, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, working closely with the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry and the affected parishes, has developed a management plan. Mosquito control is needed to protect public health from nuisances and diseases transmitted by mosquitoes.

Louisiana Chief Medical Officer Louis Cataldie, M.D., reports no new fatalities related to Hurricanes Gustav and Ike.

Governor Authorizes Oyster Lease Inspections Following Hurricane Ike
Governor Bobby Jindal signed an executive order on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008 allowing oyster leaseholders to inspect the condition of their oyster leases in response to possible effects of Hurricane Ike. 

Search and Rescue Operations Coordinated by LDWF Transport 363 Residents to Safety During Hurricane Ike's Pass Through State
Search and rescue (SAR) missions coordinated by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) successfully evacuated 363 residents from parishes impacted by Hurricane Ike between Sept. 12 and 15.

Strain puts out statewide call for hay and feed donations
Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., has put out a statewide call for donations of hay and cattle feed to supply cattle in coastal areas left stranded by the storm surge of Hurricane Ike.

DEQ responding to assess the impact of Hurricane Ike
In the wake of Hurricane Ike, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is working with federal, state and local agencies to conduct numerous inspections in the southwest portion of the state. Assessment teams went out with State Police as soon as the winds subsided to assess the extent of the damage. Assessments are being made along the coast and in affected parishes.

State Appreciates Support from Private Sector
Today, Wal-Mart announced a $250,000 donation to the Baton Rouge Area Foundation for state recovery efforts.

9/16/08 Update on Water Systems under Boil Advisory
Hurricanes Gustav and Ike have caused widespread power outages and damage to drinking water systems throughout Louisiana.

Susan W. Sonnier Appointed Deputy Secretary of Louisiana Department of Social Services
Interim Secretary for the Department of Social Services Kristy Nichols has appointed Susan W. Sonnier as her Deputy Secretary. This comes after the resignation of Terri Porche Ricks who has served at DSS for the past five years.

St. Charles High Water Reports for September 16th
The parish is currently monitoring the following areas due to high water. Please be careful as some roads may have standing water. The parish has put out signs alerting drivers to these dangers.

LaRose's T-Bois Lift Bridge to Remain Closed to Boat Traffic
The T-Bois Lift Bridge in Larose will remain closed to boat traffic until further notice. High water in that area has submerged motors for the bridge making it impossible to operate. The bridge will remain in the “down” position to allow for roadway vehicle traffic only.

Martin Luther King Center Shelter in Calcasieu Parish Closes, New Shelter Opens
The shelter at the Martin Luther King Center at 2009 North Simmons in Lake Charles has been closed by officials of the parish and the American Red Cross. A new shelter has opened at First Baptist Church in Westlake at 501 Sulphur Avenue.

DEQ-CID and LDWF partner to combat illegal dumping
The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, working in conjunction with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, charged two men in Livingston Parish for illegal dumping violations on August 29.

Mobile units in storm-impacted areas to assist with Unemployment Insurance claims, job needs
The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) has positioned three mobile units in south Louisiana to take new Unemployment Insurance claims and provide job search and placement services. The units are equipped with banks of computers connected by satellite to the LWC's computer systems.

Louisiana Guard still bringing support to citizens
he Louisiana National Guard has completed Search and Rescue missions for both Hurricane’s Gustav and Ike and now transitions more than 7,900 Guardsmen to engineering and humanitarian support operations.

Department of Social Services Opening Three More Disaster Food Stamp Sites
The Department of Social Services (DSS) will have 44 sites in operation on Tuesday, September 16th where eligible Louisiana residents affected by Hurricane Gustav can apply for the federal Disaster Food Stamp Program.

LRA Executive Director Requests that FEMA Waive Duplicate Registration for Louisiana Residents Affected by Both Gustav and Ike
Louisiana Recovery Authority Executive Director Paul Rainwater sent a letter to FEMA Monday requesting that residents in parishes affected by both Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Ike not have to register for federal assistance twice.

Coordinated LDWF Search and Rescue Missions Concluded Monday At Sunset
Search and rescue (SAR) mission reports filed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) since Sunday have added six more residents from Terrebonne Parish and one from Cameron Parish to waterborne rescue numbers following Hurricane Ike.
